Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, after Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
