Larian Studios Announce a Latest Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The anticipation around The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team is likely building a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it sparked the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and flexible progression—qualities that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths that are viable with a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be solved in diverse methods, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
