EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
